BACKGROUND

International Medical Corps, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs, seeks candidates for the position of Medical Doctor - Trauma Surgeon for our program in Akobo, South Sudan.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.

International Medical Corps has been working in Akobo Hospital since 2007, providing primary and secondary care, as well as emergency and elective surgical services. Akobo Hospital is the main referral facility for all of Akobo County in Jonglei State. Since the crisis in December 2013, this program has expanded rapidly to include nutrition programs, community health outreach and reproductive health care. Now, further expansion of surgical capacity is necessary to meet a growing caseload.

JOB SUMMARY

The primary responsibility of the Trauma Surgeon is to implement surgical services in Akobo Hospital as well as coordinate health activities at the hospital itself.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Will serve as line manager for the Nurse Supervisor and jointly oversee performance and management of the OT and its staff
  • Regularly update medical commodities officer and site manager on drugs/medical supplies and ensure that medical orders are carried out in a timely manner
  • Monitor drug and medical supply stocks through monthly consumption and inventories, noting drugs and material expiration dates and submit the same to the medical commodities officer on time
  • In collaboration with the site manager, arrange for regular trainings and clinic staff meetings, as required
  • Organize the work shift schedule for staff working in the OT
  • Ensure proper follow-up of patients within the clinic and ensure that the clinics are clean and orderly and equipment and supplies are moved and stored as per the stated guidelines
  • Perform outreach activities as may be required
  • Ensure that service statistics and all the required reports are properly collected from each department and submitted in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor
  • Participate in regular PHC activities on a needed day to day basis, when emergency surgeries are not active
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Medical degree and post graduate degree in General Surgery
  • Minimum of five years of experience required OR equivalent combination of education and experience; Obstetric experience also required
  • Experience in overseas programs, including management experience
  • Excellent communications skills, in both oral and written English; Arabic skills a plus
  • Experience in effectively dealing with international and headquarters staff, as well as donor agencies, government officials, and other NGOs; the ability to work with a broad spectrum of people
  • Resilient leader, able to inspire confidence in local and expat staff in stressful situations
  • Innovative and adaptable to the limitations of a field hospital
  • Experience in mass casualty management
  • Preferable: previous surgical experience in a developing country
