Position Summary: The Medical Coordinator is responsible for overseeing all departments at Gentil Hospital. Specific health services under the Medical Coordinator include: emergency response (ER), out-patient and in-patient department (OPD / IPD), maternity ward, and out-patient and in-patient therapeutic feeding programming. He/she will provide medical leadership and direction; safe-guard medical ethics and the quality of medical programming; and promote best-practice health programming.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Health Department Management and Supervision
- Oversee medical staff in ER, IPD, and maternity departments
- Coordinate, assess and supervise the proper functioning of the medical activities (ER, IPD, maternity, ), according to Ministry of Health protocols and procedures
- Ensure the correct compilation and analysis of medical data regarding patients’ health conditions
- Supervise and ensure that medical activities objectives under his/her responsibility are achieved
- Oversee the diagnosis of medical pathologies and conditions
- Prescribe treatments according to the pathologies diagnosed and monitor the performance of medical staff
- Treat both minor and complicated wounds, including first degree burns, abscesses, and complicated malaria
- Recognise and refer patients with conditions falling beyond the hospital’s competencies
- Monitor the health needs (including water and sanitation, nutrition, etc.) and priorities at Gentil Hospital
- Ensure quality drug and material supply (with logistics support) is maintained (specifically, this includes ensuring medical overview of drug stocks and pharmacies, management of data for forecasting, ordering drug and medical materials, and training of medical and non-medical/logistics staff)
Human Resource Management
The medical doctor will managing the team of clinical officers, nurses, midwives, and department supervisors;identifying human resource gaps and need; and communicating any issues of underperformance to country leadership. Duties include:
- With the clinical officers, midwives, and senior medical team, anticipate and organise replacements of absent personnel according to the departmental activity
- Check that work planning is followed by the personnel (hours, presence etc.)
- Ensure the administrative follow up of members of his service and passing on administrative data (sick leave, overtime, etc.)
- Organise and supervise the work of his / her team members
- Lead and organise regular team meetings
- Organise the circulation of information within his / her team
- Identify personnel with potential within his team and fostering growth and capacity development
- Carry out systematic (at least annual) individual reviews of staff under his / her responsibility, together with the Health and Nutrition Coordinator
Capacity Building and Training
- Define the training needs of the ER, IPD, nutrition, and maternity staff
- Conduct routine on-the-job training for his / her team as needed
- Promote linkages between and across other RI-supported health facilities in Maban through routine engagement and monitoring visits
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Medical qualification (M.D or nurse)
- Course in Tropical Medicine (for coordinators going to tropical countries) or Public Health
- Ideally, participation in an PSP, MMC and/or BMC course
- A minimum of 2 years post registration (clinical) work experience
- Experience in management of medical programmes and supervision of other expatriate staff in at least one project
- Ability to cope with stress
- Ability to work well as part of a multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary team
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload, using initiative when appropriate
- Able to work independently
- Good communicator
- Good organisational skills
