About ERP:

ERP is a South Sudanese nongovernmental organization established and registered in 2007. It aims to empower local communities to manage their natural resources and their environment in a more sustainable manner. ERP’s activities include tree seedling raising and planting, training on farming and agricultural production, empowerment of school environmental clubs, community awareness raising, environmental conflict resolution and peace building, natural resource management, research, lobby and advocacy. ERP is one of the only South Sudanese NGOs with a clear focus on environmental issues and it has an extended network of local and national governmental bodies as well as CSOs, INGOs and UN organizations working in the field of environmental protection.

About the project “Juba Recycles”:

Juba Recycles is a 12 months project funded by the French Embassy in South Sudan and implemented together with Southern Sudan Beverages Limited (SSBL) and Voice for Change (VFC) which aims to create training, employment and income generation opportunities for vulnerable populations, while providing a sustainable solution to solid waste management and pollution, in and around Juba. The main activities are to: ,1. Establish a PET processing plant and a project office; 2. Establish plastic Collection Cooperatives (CCs) benefiting women in Juba; 3. Improve the working conditions and income generation opportunities of waste pickers at the Yei Road landfill; 4. Raise the environmental awareness of school children on environmental protection and engage them in waste separation and plastic collection; 5. Engage hotels, gated compounds, restaurants and bottled-water companies in waste separation and plastic collection.

Scope of work:

Under the overall responsibility of the ERP Executive Director and the direct supervision of the Programme Adviser, the Project Officer for Collection Cooperatives and Waste Pickers will: Support the establishment of Collection Cooperatives (CCs) for plastic benefiting women; advise CCs on how to improve plastic collection practices; identify and adapt existing materials to deliver basic trainings (numeracy, literacy, entrepreneurship, etc.) in accordance with the needs of the CC members; conduct basic trainings on environmental protection and plastic recycling for CC members; explore additional income generation activities related to waste and recycling for the collection cooperatives; liaise between the Collection Cooperatives and the project management. Inform and support waste-pickers in the collection of plastic bottles at the Yei Road landfill; liaise between the waste-pickers, Juba County, other organizations working at the landfill (SSDO, UNEP, etc.) and the project management. Conduct any other task related to the project and the activities of ERP.

Qualifications: Education and Experience:

• Bachelor or Masters’ degree in environmental sciences, community development, social sciences, education, waste management or related field
• At least two years working experience with NGOs, CSOs, UN or other organizations working in the field of community development, income generation or environmental protection
• Experience in teaching or conducting informal trainings

  1. Write and communicate fluently and articulately in English;
  2. Communicate fluently in Juba Arabic
  3. Develop and manage relationships with a diplomatic, personable and customer-oriented approach;
  4. Juggle multiple competing priorities;
  5. Work under pressure and to tight deadlines;
  6. Demonstrate personal commitment, flexibility, efficiency and willingness to learn;
  7. Understanding of broad environmental issues, solid-waste management or recycling;
  8. Excellent command of the Microsoft office programmes (Explorer, Excel, Word).

Contract period: ASAP – 15 November 2013
Location: Juba
Salary: National South Sudanese NGO salary based on qualifications and experience
