The Norwegian Refugee Council in South Sudan is looking for a Conflict Analyst to join their team. This is an interesting and key role which supports the humanitarian community in South Sudan, and the Protection Cluster in particular, with current and in-depth context and conflict analysis to inform strategic and operational planning and decision-making, as well as support key humanitarian policy and advocacy efforts.

Job description

• Produce analytical reports on the conflict and humanitarian crisis in South Sudan with a view to supporting strategic and operational decision-making in key humanitarian fora
• Provide advice on key humanitarian policy and advocacy efforts, particularly in support of the Protection Cluster
• Ensure the daily management and implementation of the project, including timely production of deliverables, budget management, oversight of consultants, and donor reporting
• Build network with relevant stakeholders to gain access to and exchange information and analysis on the context and conflict in South Sudan; and foster partnerships and networking with non-humanitarian actors
• Participate in relevant fora/clusters and meetings, including with national authorities and donors as required
• Convene workshops, roundtables, and trainings to foster a better analysis and understanding of emerging trends and thematic issues
• Provide contextual analysis briefings to inter-agency forums, donors, and the diplomatic community; and offer advice on conflict-sensitive approaches to humanitarian assistance
• Produce quarterly trends reports, situation updates, and other ad hoc reports as relevant
• Support NRC internal advocacy work by assisting in drafting press releases, talking points, and ad-hoc messaging as necessary
• Develop, manage and supervise in-depth research projects

Qualifications

• Post graduate degree in international law, political and social sciences, or related field; PhD is a strong advantage
• Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience working on conflict or political analysis, field research or on humanitarian advocacy
• Documented experience with research and the production of high quality written material – such as reports, briefing notes, research papers, etc.
• Documented experience with humanitarian operations, particularly protection, humanitarian space and access, or conflict sensitive approaches
• Experience working in complex and volatile environments
• Fluency in English, both written and verbal
• Previous experience or strong knowledge of the context and conflict in South Sudan

Personal qualities

• Confident and effective communicator, with experience and confidence in giving public briefings and presentations
• Strong inter-personal skills, working well in teams and independently, and with minimal supervision
• Highly developed writing skills
• Self-motivated and excellent observer of political and protection issues
• Able to work and deliver regular quality written products with short deadlines

We offer

• Duty Station: Juba, South Sudan
• Travel: 20%
• Contract Duration: 12 months, starting January 2019
