Polish Humanitarian Action (PAH) has been working in South Sudan and Jonglei State specifically, since 2006. Our main area of expertise is providing WASH services to disadvantaged rural populations through drilling and rehabilitating boreholes, creating sustainable O&M structures, providing hygiene promotion and safe sanitation. PAH is running a WASH project in which we have been considerably expanding the EP&R component according to the needs identified primarily in Jonglei State, and all South Sudan in general. PAH is hence looking for candidates to work as WASH Tech Assistants in the Emergency Response Team (ERT). The Team’s primary objective is reacting to WASH crises in Jonglei State. The Emergency Response Team will also organize and/or support distributions of non-food items (NFIs), especially WASH-related. The team will mainly work in Jonglei and will be deployable to other states, if the need arises. The position will include frequent trips to rural areas of Jonglei State, where the team will most likely live in tents, have access to basic food and will walk long distances in case of lack of other means of transportation.
Workplace: primarily Jonglei State; all states of South Sudan

Initial Contract Details: 6 months with the possibility of extension, depending on funding for following projects
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
WASH Tech Assistants will be part of the Emergency Response Team created specifically to respond to WASH emergencies occurring in Jonglei State. The Team will be capable of providing emergency water supply and sanitation solutions, as well as hygiene promotion suitable for Jonglei and other states. The position will include frequent trips to rural areas of Jonglei State, where the team will most likely live in tents, have access to basic food and will walk long distances in case of lack of other means of transportation.
The main responsibilities of WASH Tech Assistants will be:
Visits to the areas where WASH emergencies occur and responding to these emergencies through:
Working under supervision of and providing technical support to WASH Technicians
Rehabilitations and drilling of new boreholes
Borehole and other water scheme repairs
Upgrading boreholes to mini or full water yards
Setting up Surface Water Treatment plants (SWATs)
Constructing emergency latrines, rehabilitating existing institutional latrines
Cooperation and working with local pump mechanics
Cooperation with local authorities and local communities
Maintaining an accurate record and taking proper care of all field equipment and material stocks for the WASH ER Team
Documentation and monitoring of water infrastructure, water point mapping
QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS:
Essential:
Self-starter, independent and committed individual willing to work in insecure environments with simple living conditions
At least 2 years of experience in the WASH sector
Experience in drilling and repairing India Mark hand pumps, experience in repairing Duba Tropic will be an asset; setting up SWATs and other water supply solutions
Strong command of written and spoken English
Ability to cope with simple living conditions in insecure environments
Team spirit, supporting a team of up to 7 people
Desirable:
Language skills in Arabic/ Nuer and other local languages
Experience of working and living in South Sudan and Jonglei State in particular
Ability to use communication technologies: sat phone / radio
Previous work experience in NGOs
