Nonviolent Peaceforce (NP) is a dynamic international, nongovernmental organisation which works to reduce violence and protect civilians in situations of violent conflict and its aftermath, mostly through the deployment on the ground of multinational teams of civilians.
In South Sudan, NP has 8 field teams providing thematically focused protection programming in child protection, gender-based violence protection and prevention, and displacement (IDPs, refugees and returnees, inter-communal violence reduction and conflict early warning/early response). This young country programme is growing rapidly, responding to the dynamic, high-needs environment in South Sudan.
The role of an International Protection Officer to implement protection programming designed to reduce violence and increase the safety and security of civilians affected from violent conflict. This involves providing protective accompaniment and protective presence, engaging in rumour control, de-escalating tensions, facilitating dialogue, providing technical skills training, conflict analysis and finding creative solutions to challenging problems. In addition, this role requires working with a wide variety of actors ranging from government officials, traditional leaders, community members, military, police, non-state armed actors and other humanitarian service providers. S/he proactively seeks to coordinate with relevant actors, to facilitate the participation from those who are underrepresented and to serve as interlocutor between communities and agencies who provide services. S/he recognizes changes in conflict dynamics, can predict escalating tensions and can adapt quickly to change. Protection officers are persistent and endlessly determined to find solutions that will improve safety and security for conflict-affected civilians. S/he will work as a part of the existing NP protection teams and/or the roving emergency response team in Jonglei State comprised of international and national colleagues.

All employees are expected to have an understanding of and commitment to the organisation’s mission and objectives and to be able to work in English (the official working language). Knowledge of local languages would be an advantage.
