Deputy Chief of Party, South Sudan

We are seeking Deputy Chief of Party candidates for an anticipated multi-year USAID-funded opportunity in South Sudan called the Markets for Agricultural Incomes and Competitiveness (MAGIC) project. The MAGIC program will contribute to USAID/South Sudan’s overall strategy for an “Increasingly stable South Sudan, demonstrating responsiveness to citizens’ needs.” MAGIC will strive for results in increased competitiveness of South Sudanese agricultural goods, improved livelihoods and increased household incomes. This will be achieved through interventions in several areas, including private sector-led agricultural market strengthening, agricultural productivity, capacity building, nutrition-sensitive agriculture and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) coordination and innovative grants and public-private partnerships. USAID/South Sudan focuses the vast majority of agriculture interventions in the “Greenbelt” – the fertile and relatively stable agro-ecological zone that spreads across the three Equatoria States in the southern part of the country.

Responsibilities: Support the Chief of Party in attaining project goals and objectives by providing technical advice and direction when appropriate as well as administrative oversight. Working to address priorities related to value chain development and upgrading and innovative solutions for impacts along various value chains. Support activities related to improved aggregation, post-harvest handling and storage; market linkages; trade facilitation; business enabling environment; and other activities that promote value chain competitiveness and food security. Contribute to the cross-cutting goals of the program. Assist with management of relationships with local organizations, private sector stakeholders and government bodies. Prepare/assist in preparation of periodic written and oral reports to USAID and ACDI/VOCA headquarters. Review of all financial and logistical information on a periodic basis. Quality control and timeliness of all deliverables. Preparation contribution to/of work plans, financial, logistical and other documents. Ensure effective contract management, reporting, communications and relationship management with USAID.

Qualifications: MS, MBA, or other post-graduate degree in a relevant technical field. Demonstrated expertise and a minimum 8 years’ experience working on value chain development, in areas such as Crop Production, Market Linkages, Post-Harvest Handling, and Access to Finance. Minimum 5 years’ experience working at a senior level on international development projects required, with experience managing USAID-funded projects strongly preferred. Demonstrated knowledge of the latest developments in advancing good/best practices in value chain development and USAID’s value chain approach. Demonstrated creativity, willingness to innovate, think systemically and design catalytic approaches to intervening. Excellent communication and reporting skills. Fluency in English required.
