ERP is a South Sudanese nongovernmental organization established and registered in 2007. It aims to empower local communities to manage their natural resources and their environment in a more sustainable manner. ERP’s activities include tree seedling raising and planting, training on farming and agricultural production, empowerment of school environmental clubs, community awareness raising, environmental conflict resolution and peace building, natural resource management, research, lobby and advocacy. ERP is one of the only South Sudanese NGOs with a clear focus on environmental issues and it has an extended network of local and national governmental bodies as well as CSOs, INGOs and UN organizations working in the field of environmental protection.
Together with Southern Sudan Beverages Limited (SSBL), ERP is implementing the programme Juba Recycles. The first plastic recycling initiative in South Sudan aims to create training, employment and income generation opportunities for vulnerable populations, while providing a sustainable solution to solid waste management and pollution, in and around Juba.
Following the political crisis and armed conflict which began on 15th December 2013, approximately 40,000 civilians have sought protection in UN bases in Juba. Together with humanitarian partners, ERP has been working on Solid Waste Management (SWM) solutions and income generation activities for dsiplaced communities.
Scope of work
Under the overall responsibility of the Executive Director and the direct supervision of the Programme Adviser, ERP is looking for a highly motivated Officer to work on a short-term project. The successful candidate will:
Support the establishment of a Collection Cooperative for plastic bottles benefiting displaced people in the Protection of Civilians Sites in Juba; advise beneficiaries on how to improve plastic collection practices; coordination of recyclables pick-up; conduct basic trainings on environmental protection and plastic recycling for beneficiaries; coordinate an information campaign about the importance of plastic waste segregation (to avoid blocked sewages and latrines); liaise with hygiene promotion, SWM and WASH stakeholders to ensure synergies and avoid duplication.
Conduct any other task related to the project and the activities of ERP.
Qualifications: Education and ExperienceBachelor or Masters’ degree in environmental sciences, community development, health, social sciences, education, waste management or related field; At least two years working experience with NGOs, CSOs, UN or other organizations working in the field of humanitarian assistance, community development, income generation or environmental protection

- Demonstrate personal commitment, flexibility, efficiency and willingness to learn;
- Understanding of broad environmental issues, solid-waste management and humanitarian assistance;
- Excellent command of the Microsoft office programmes (Explorer, Excel, Word).

Contract period: 1 month starting ASAP
