Under the supervision of the Ministry of Health and the State Ministry of Health for Lakes State, Malteser International manages the Rumbek Health Training School (RHTS). The RHTS is expected to significantly raise the production and quality of training midlevel Human Resources for Health (HRH) and improve their performance. In line this objective, the RHTS is expected to produce at least 106 well training graduates (48 enrolled nurses and 58 laboratory technicians) by early 2016.

To support and lead the teaching staff at the Rumbek Health Trainig School (RHTS) in South Sudan, Malteser International is looking for a Deputy Principal Tutor (Nurse or Midwife).

As Deputy Principal Tutor, you will contribute towards producing at least 106 well trained graduates being familiar with high professional standards and professional integrity. Particularly, you will develop and oversee the certified nursing course. You will contribute with your professional competences in tutoring and proper supervision of the nursing students. Furthermore, you will advise the Principal Tutor in matters related to the certified nursing course and assist him in the day-to-day management of the school as well as the professional development of the RHTS.
The Deputy Principal reports directly to the Principal RHTS.

Responsibilities:

A. Teaching:

  • Teaching the nursing students in areas of the relevant competence and in line with the curriculum for certified nurses approved by the Ministry of Health
  • Coordinate and closely supervise work of groups during training in wards, using assessments checklist and link up the students up with the relevant senior nurse officers
  • Prepare in the necessary training materials for students
  • Help organize and supervise extra-curricular activities for the students, i.e. sport, entertainment, and other events of interest for the students

B. Coordination of the Certified Nursing Course:

  • Contribute to the development of a uniform performance monitoring system for students and tutor alike in cooperation with the RHTS´s schools management
  • Organize the necessary clinical placements for the nursing students and liaise with the relevant senior nurse officer in the different relevant wards
  • Determine groups for clinical placements and organize the nursing students rotation through the ward
  • Develop and check detailed classes´ plan for contents and methodology for all teaching subject of the nursing course; back the nursing teachers in their planning tasks
  • Draw up the checklists for assessments of theoretical subjects and for each segment of clinical placements according to the skills to be acquired in each subject/placement by the nursing students
  • Maintain detailed track of each nursing student´s performance
  • Check together with the teachers the performance of the final year nursing students and make sure that all fails are amended
  • Check out the respective continuous assessment test dates of all subjects of the nursing course and monitor the students‘ performance by regularly checking the school register
  • Coordinate the nursing course teachers and supervise their performance
  • Compile the students’ assessments and examination results
  • Advise the finance/administration unit on the technical parts of equipment and teaching material that is necessary to procure

C. Act as Deputy Principal to the RHTS:

  • Collaborate in the development of the schools statutes, its rules and regulations, the adjustment of ToRs for tutors, the development of a Performance Management System; Standard Operating Procedures and other systems to develop to ensure transparent and accountable performance reviews, to be presented and approved by the schools´ Board of Governors (BoG)
  • Collaborate in the development of annual work plans, budgets and narrative progress reports to be presented to the DT&PD of MoH and to SMoH in a timely manner
  • Assist in curricula reviews and updates for nursing courses organized by the MoH
  • Assist in the organization of monitoring/peer learning sessions
  • Support the school management and governmental partner organizations in identifying South Sudanese candidates for nursing tutor positions and assist in the gradual handing over of tutor positions to South Sudanese nationals
  • Supervise the nursing teachers’ performance regarding respect for contents, methodology and behavior in classes
  • Observe in cooperation with the Principal Advisor that time tables of the schools activities are respected by students and tutors and report any anomalies to the Principal Tutor
  • Preside in agreement with the Principal Tutor over ordinary school coordination meetings
  • Cooperate with the VSO volunteer who is expected to be assigned to the nursing programme and assist in the proper placement for her so that her skills will be most benefiting to the RHTS and the nursing students

The Deputy Principal is expected to perform other duties as becomes necessary in coordination and agreement with the Principal Tutor.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Applicants must be South Sudanese nationals
  • Degree or Diploma in Nursing, Midwifery (or equivalent)
  • Training in tutorship
  • At least five years experience in teaching or mentoring students on clinical placements
  • Fluency in English (written and spoken); spoken Arabic would be an asset
  • Fully computer literate (Microsoft Office)
