****BACKGROUND****

International Medical Corps, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs, seeks candidates for the position of ****Surgical Nurse**** for our programs in South Sudan.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. ****JOB SUMMARY****

The primary responsibility of the ****Surgical Nurse**** will be to work closely with the Anesthetist and Surgeon (and any other members of the Roving Surgical Team) to maintain secondary (emergency and surgical) health care service provision and direct care of the program activities. This position includes working in static and mobile facilities.

****ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES****

  • Supervise the nursing assistants and follow up performance of tasks of all national staff working within the IMC facilities
  • Assist the Medical Coordinator in setting up and running routine and emergency activities as required
  • Regularly update other members of the team and Program Manager on drugs/medical supplies and ensure that medical orders are made in a timely manner
  • Monitor drug and medical supply stocks through monthly consumption and inventories, noting drugs and material expiration dates and submit the same to the Medical Coordinator on time
  • In collaboration with the Medical Coordinator and other members of the Roving Surgical team, arrange for regular trainings and clinic staff meetings as required
  • Supervise the running of the pharmacy and ensure rational use of drugs as per the guidelines laid out by the Medical Coordinator and Program Manager as needed
  • Organize the work shift schedule for staff working in the in-patient facility if needed
  • Ensure proper follow-up of patients within the secondary care facility, and that the hospital (including OT) is clean, orderly, and equipment and supplies are moved and stored as per the guidelines
  • Perform outreach activities and coordination as may be required
  • Ensure that service statistics and all the required reports are properly collected from each department and submitted in a timely manner to the immediate supervisor
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, rapid assessments, and eventual emergency responses in collaboration with the entire team
  • Any other duties as assigned by supervisor

****QUALIFICATIONS****

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Valid medical degree/diploma (RN or NP), with evidence of emergency training and experience
  • Minimum of three years related experience, with at least one year in a developing country (conflict and post-conflict experience a plus) OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Strong leadership and training skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions independently
  • Extremely flexible, with the ability to cope with stressful situations and frustrations
  • Ability to relate to and motivate staff effectively
  • Creativity and the ability to work with limited resources
  • Skills and knowledge in program sustainability and capacity building, public-private partnerships, and project monitoring and evaluation (both quantitative and qualitative methods)
  • History of working closely with maternal and child health programs, mental health, and gender based violence (GBV) programs preferred
