****BACKGROUND****

International Medical Corps, a global humanitarian nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives and relieving suffering through health care training and relief and development programs, seeks candidates for the position of ****Anesthetist**** for our program in the teaching hospital in Malakal, South Sudan.

Established in 1984 by volunteer doctors and nurses, International Medical Corps is a private, voluntary, nonpolitical, nonsectarian organization. Its mission is to improve the quality of life through health interventions and related activities that build local capacity in underserved communities worldwide. By offering training and health care to local populations and medical assistance to people at highest risk, and with the flexibility to respond rapidly to emergency situations, International Medical Corps rehabilitates devastated health care systems and helps bring them back to self-reliance.

International Medical Corps has been awarded funding through the United Nations Populations Fund-South Sudan (UNFPA-South Sudan) to support Malakal Teaching Hospital. This is a tertiary hospital in Upper Nile delivering services to a wide catchment area in South Sudan. The project focuses on returning hospital services to the facility, which was damaged during the conflict. The hospital has remained abandoned since December of 2013, but is in moderately good repair, except for some minor renovations and power to be provided. International Medical Corps, in partnership with the UNFPA and Ministry of Health, seeks an experienced ****Anesthetist****to provide assistance to the Ob/Gyn for conducting emergency surgical interventions, specifically targeted towards restoring Emergency Obstetrics to the hospital, as well as training and capacity building of national staff.

****JOB SUMMARY****

The ****Anesthetist**** is responsible for serving as an anesthesia specialist and trainer, to provide consultation and administer anesthesia with a full range of anesthesia methods and techniques applicable in remote and poorly equipped environments.

****ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES****

  • Administer anesthesia to patients for surgery or diagnostic procedures
  • Prepare preoperative assessments, including health histories and physical examinations
  • Develop the Anesthesia Care Plan and protocols compliant with national and international standards
  • Initiate and maintain appropriate Intraoperative Anesthesia Care
  • Complete postoperative evaluations, in accordance with department policies
  • Document and archive patients’ preoperative assessments pre-, intra-, and postoperative anesthesia procedures
  • Train local health personal in anesthesia procedures
  • Compile weekly, monthly, and quarterly activity reports and submit relevant information to the Program Team
  • Other duties as assigned

****QUALIFICATIONS****

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Nursing degree, with specialization in anesthesia (Nurse-Anesthetist)
  • Three or more years of experience in administering anesthesia OR equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous anesthesia experience in a developing world country preferred
  • Experience in overseas programs at the manager level preferred
  • Excellent training skills, including both on the job and formal training
  • Experience in effectively dealing with international and headquarters staff, as well as donor agencies, government officials, and other NGO’s
  • Ability to work with a broad spectrum of people
  • Innovative and adaptable to the limitations of a field hospital
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work under high stress and complex conditions
  • English language required
