The offices of MSF-Holland in Juba, South Sudan would like to invite applications from individuals wishing to work in the following position:

Position: Midwife
Location: Lankien, South Sudan
Duration: Minimum Two Months
Start: As soon as possible

General presentation of MSF:

Medecins Sans Frontieres (also known as Doctors Without Borders or MSF) is a private, non-profit; international humanitarian medical organization, which intervenes in emergencies and crisis situation, to relive human suffering from unmet medical needs, and to create a space for humanity. MSF works to incite a social and political response that meets the essential needs, and respects and protect the dignity of people in danger. MSF observes strict neutrality with respect to political issues and renders its assistance without making any discrimination on the basis of race, religion, ideology, or political organisation, respecting its Charter and shared principles. Core responsibilities and tasks:

Medical operations

  • To be part of the team running the Reproductive Health services and maternity ward including ANC/PNC services, SGBV services, some limited gynecological services/STIs and family planning services
  • To assess and manage all complicated obstetrical cases.
  • To introduce and monitor improvements in systems to facilitate the smooth running of these services.
  • To teach, train and supervise staff both on the job training and as part of a planned training schedule as appropriate.
  • To participate in staff performance evaluations.
  • To participate in the on call system during the night/weekend—sometimes every other night depending on staffing.
  • To participate in the regular weekly training program in conjunction with the rest of the medical team.
  • To be part of the planning and completion of the monthly duty roster in conjunction with national staff supervisor.
  • To assist the national staff with any general problems on the ward/ clinics that they are unable to solve.
  • To ensure that all MSF-H health activities are carried out according to MSF-H protocols, guidelines and standards.
  • To ensure health and safety protocols and procedures are implemented and improved at all times and conduct relevant staff training.
  • Ensuring the cleanliness of the working environment and equipment used at all times
  • To be engaged in TBA meeting in order to reinforce the message that they should refer complicated cases to the hospital.
  • In conjunction with expatriate midwife and medical team leader explore and develop strategies to increase utilization of reproductive health services with the aim of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality.
  • Participate and motivate women groups within the community to talk about good health practices, disease prevention, pregnancy, HIV, etc.

Planning /reporting/data collection

  • To facilitate data collection for weekly and monthly reports for maternity and ANC/PNC /STI/family planning/SGBV based on the data collected in these services
  • To analyze the monthly report data and assist in report making.
  • To follow the guidelines of the SS medical supply system which involves the monitoring and supervising the provision of all medical supplies, weekly counting and requests, consumption monitoring and data entry.
  • To be actively involved in medical team discussions and policy making

Requirements

Training

  • Midwife with tropical medicine background (clinical tropical medicine course is recommended).

Experience

  • Midwife/ obstetric nurse with experience in management of complicated/high risk obstetrics.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Good communication skills essential.
  • Experience required ideally in a similar set-up as Lankien.

  • Able to work independently and have initiative
  • A proven ability to work well within a team
  • Good sense of humour required to cope with isolated conditions, limited luxuries, a hot climate and basic living conditions
  • Flexible, stress resistant and ready for a challenge
  • Able to handle isolated sporadic insecurity in an otherwise calm environment.

Linguistic competence: English, Arabic would be an asset
